Lesson 2 Equipment

So now you understand they types of breaks and currents that are involved in surfing. With this knowledge in mind you can move on to the next step. They type of equipment you need to surf is important. Take a few minutes to read over some of the most important tools to have before you hit the waves.

Surfboard: A shortboard will probably catch your eye first. Remember though, it will be almost impossible to learn how to surf on this type of board. Go get something thick, long and heavy. Your best bet is an 8ft foam board.

Leash: Even most of the pros use them. They keep your board attached to you. This will allow you not to lose your board. Be careful though because you could also get tangled on rock or choral.

Surf Wax: Used for traction on a board. Some surfers install traction pads on their boards, but wax is far more popular. Rub this all over the top of the board before you hit the water.

Okay you understand breaks and currents and you have your gear. You are set to get started. Whoa wait, before you jump into the water we have to do some training exercises on the beach. Practicing on the beach will allow you to perfect some of the maneuvers before you get into the surf.
